Wir wollten unsere freie Zeit bevor Rica ins Berufsleben durchstartet noch einmal nutzen um uns ein wenig die Gegend um Auckland anzuschauen. Unser Ziel hieß Rangitoto.
Rangitoto ist eine Insel im Hauraki Golf vor Auckland und entstand vor 600 Jahren, somit war sie die letzte Insel und zugleich auch größter Vulkan auf dem Auckland Vulkan Feld. Der Krater ragt nur circa 250 m aus dem Meer, reicht aber um einen tollen Ausblick auf andere Inseln und das Festland zu bekommen. Rangitoto ist wie jede andere Vulkaninsel hauptsächlich schwarz, aber in den letzten Hunderten von Jahren hat sich hier auch eine vielfältige Flora entwickeln können. Viele verschiedene Farne und auch schöne blühende Büsche.
Der Krater ist schon sehr lange nicht mehr aktiv und ist auch mittlerweile vollkommen zugewachsen. Es geht die Meinung unter den Wissenschaftlern rum, dass eine derartige Entstehung wie bei Rangitoto noch einmal zu erwarten ist. Das heißt, dass ein großer Vulkan sich aus dem Meer empor heben wird. Die Erde unter Neuseeland ist ständig aktiv und auch Erdbeben sind hier an der Tagesordnung, wovon wir allerdings noch nicht berichten können.
Nach der Kraterbesteigung sind wir weiter zu den Lava Höhlen. Diese entstanden bei dem letzten Ausbruch, als heißes Magma unter schon erstarrtem Lava durchfloss. Die Höhlen sind relativ klein,aber dunkel genug um Rica vor eine kleine Mutprobe zu stellen, da wir unsere Taschenlampen nicht mit hatten.
Unten an der Bootanlegestelle wieder angekommen, machten wir noch Bekanntschaft mit zwei Stockentenpärchen, welche unser übriges Proviant aus den Händen fraßen.
Alles in Allem war es gut, aber nicht zu spannend. Also kein „must see“. Abends pflegten wir gegenseitig unseren Sonnenbrand und haben seit dem nun endlich Neuseelandtaugliche Sonnencreme und After Sun Creme, für Tage wie diese!

we tried to use our freetime, before Rica started her new job, to discover the area around Auckland. Our destiny was Rangitoto.
Rangitoto is an island in the Hauraki Gulf and arose 600 years ago, so it is the last island and the biggest vulcano on the Auckland vulcano field. The crater is just 250 m above the sea, but it is high enough to get a nice overview about the islands and the mainland surrounded. Rangitoto is like every other vulcano island, mainly black, but a great flora could develop in the last hundreds of years. There are a lot of different ferns and beautifull plants.
The crater is not anymore activ and crowded by plants. Scientist got the oppinion that there will be another event like Rangitoto coming in the future. That means, a big Vulcano will rise up from the sea. The earth under New Zealand is still activ, also earthquakes are common, but we can not report things like that so far.
After climbing up the crater we went to the lava caves. Those were created when by the last erruption while hot liquid lava flows underneath already cold and fix lava. The caves are quite small , but dark enough to be a test of courrage for Rica, because we forgott our torches.
Back to the pier we met 2 pairs of ducks and were feeding them with our last food by hand.
All in all, Rangitoto is not that exciting. So it is no „must see“. Since that trip we both got sun burn, but I bought now Sun creme and also after sun creme, so we are prepared for the next sunny trip.
